CBSE Exams – How To Cope Up With Stress?

Education

CBSE examinations are an important juncture most students in India go through during their school education. These exams take place in the 10th and 12th standards as part of the 10+2 scheme of education. Commonly known as “board exams”, CBSE Class 11 Physics exams are not only a difficult time for students but also a testing period for parents. This becomes more important as a lot of career options and admission for higher education in India depend upon one’s performance in the 10th and 12th standard board examinations.

Following are some of the strategies that can be employed by children and parents to cope up better.

For Students

o Do not study continuously to make most of the time at hand. In stead, divide the syllabus in parts and study with breaks. Take each stage as an accomplishment to celebrate and give yourself credit for the same.

o Understand your body clock and concentration levels to work out the best time-table for self-study.

o For difficult subjects, study with your friends and class fellows. Discussion of tough points helps one understand them better.

o Do not be bogged down if your previous results haven’t been great. Learn from past mistakes and weak areas. Work on them.

o Try to study at a place that has minimum disturbances.

o Average students must work on and master areas of study they are comfortable with.

o Low achievers must work on the most essential points of a subject.

o Prepare a timetable for study. Do remember to include things that you enjoy doing for break periods. These can be anything from playing in the park to watching your favourite TV program. Though it is difficult at times, but do try and stick to your self-study timetable.

o Prioritize your timetable so that you can devote your best concentration to the most difficult subject.

o Do revise the points already learnt. Writing learnt parts is a good idea as it helps to recall the information easily during exam.

o Do not keep studying right until the last moment before the exam. It helps if you stop studying and revising the night before. Relax with what you’ve learnt and have a good night’s sleep.

o Do not concentrate on thinking and worrying about the result. There is a plethora of options and opportunities available for every child these days. Just concentrate on giving your best!

For Parents

o Every child has his/her abilities and weaknesses. Know your child for what s/he IS rather than imposing absolute expectations.

o Guide your child in planning, organizing and working on a timetable.

o Provide supportive environment so that the child feels motivated to study.

o Help your child in building up his/her self-discipline and self-confidence by encouraging achievements rather than bickering about failures. Help them win over weak points (within individual limits, of course) by working on the same.

o Good schooling and tuition (if needed by the child) DO NOT compensate for what you as a parent can provide. Love, care and an understanding attitude from your side are very crucial factors.

o There will be times your child feels discouraged by low marks or the inability to concentrate properly. On these occasions, control your anger and anxiety from bursting onto the child.

o Understand your child’s capabilities and set realistic goals accordingly.

o Keep family issues and academic matters absolutely separate.

o Always praise your child’s achievements, howsoever small they may be.

o Help the child in chalking out a work plan. They might not be aware of learning problems you as a parent know about them.

o Do not keep nagging the child about previous bad results. Help him/her in positively working for upcoming examinations in stead.

o If your expectations are too high for the child to live up to, s/he might stop trying because they know it is beyond them. So your expectations are a crucial factor in the child’s motivational level.

o Spend relaxing moments with your child. Talk lightheartedly about things non-academic.

o Be a friend to your child. Discuss their problems and help them find solutions.

o Remember to help your child give their best. There is life beyond examinations too!
